Waquoit Church Kicks off 175th Anniversary Year
The Waquoit Congregational Church celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, and is planning a special worship service to kick off the year-long celebration. Sunday, March 12 marks the day the church first opened in 1848. In commemoration, there will be a special worship service starting at 10 am with music and guest speakers. Following the service, there will be a lunch in parish hall.
The Rev. Darrell Goodwin, Executive Conference Minister of the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ, will be preacher this Sunday.
“We are grateful that families in the village of Waquoit had the vision to build a church here. Our church has become the center of Waquoit Village and a beacon for the entire Falmouth community,” said Rev. Nell Fields, Waquoit’s minister.
The Waquoit Church is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and is the oldest public building in Waquoit, the smallest of Falmouth’s eight villages. Its traditional paint scheme of white and dark green have helped make the church an iconic landmark in East Falmouth.
The public is invited to the March 12 celebration and lunch. For more information, call the church office at 508-548-5269.
