Waquoit at War: Photo Lecture Saturday, May 20

Cape Military Museum Presents “Waquoit at War”  Saturday, May 20

In honor of Armed Forces Day and the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the Waquoit Congregational Church, local historian Joe Yukna, cofounder of the Cape Cod Military Museum, will give a photo lecture on the military events and civilian interaction in Waquoit during WWII. The presentation will be held Saturday, May 20, 3 pm, at the Waquoit Congregational Church parish hall.

Mr. Yukna will present a few of the “big unknown” stories of the war, such as General Patton’s 1942 speech to the 36th Texas Inf. Div., and Joe Louis’ boxing match on Washburn Island in 1943.  He also will share some of the “smaller” stories of children scouring the beaches looking for foil pouches of instant coffee.  The presentation will include Sgt. Stubby, the military museum’s mascot.

Sponsored by the Cape Cod Military Museum and the Waquoit Church, the presentation is free and opened to the public. Waquoit Church is located at 15 Parson Lane and Rte. 28, Waquoit, MA.
